Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone 20th Anniversary

26 June 2017 marked the 20th Anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. The book has been important to so many people, and inspired a generation of Potter fans and readers, that we could not let this important occasion go unmarked; so, for the last week of June we asked staff and students to vote on their favourites in a number of Harry Potter related categories. The winners were:

Favourite Book: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (24%)

Favourite Film Adaptation: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire  (26%)

Favourite Hogwarts Subject: Defence against the Dark Arts (D.A.D.A.) (44%)

Favourite Hogwarts Ghost: Nearly Headless Nick (45%)

Favourite Weasley Family Member: Ginny Weasley (32%)

Favourite Magical Creature: Hippogriff (41%)

As many of you know, we also welcomed a number of prospective students and their families to SHS on Friday 30 June and felt it only fair that we give them a voice on these categories as well.  This led to a great deal of discussion and thought, and I hope you enjoyed the experience! Results from the Open Morning Poll are:

Favourite Book: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (23%)

Favourite Film Adaptation: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (32%)

Favourite Hogworts Subject: Potions (37%)

Favourite Hogwarts Ghost: Moaning Myrtle (46%)

Favourite Weasley Family Member: Ginny Weasley (66%)

Favourite Magical Creature: Hippogriff (45%)

Finally, we challenged all house families to remember delve deep into their memories and answer a series of questions about the books and films. The answers were often entertaining, frequently correct and occasionally bizarre, but the results were fantastic. Congratulations to the winning teams of C1, C26, G7, K11, S2 & S17 all of whom received a very special ‘golden snitch’ to share. A special commendation went to G20 for being able to recall a truly great amount of the ‘Sorting Hat’ song – it may not have been requested but it made my day!
