SHS Chess Club Report January 2021

We have had several new Year 7s join the Stroud High School Chess Club since September, which regularly takes part in on line inter school team chess competitions. There are now 14 members of the online chess club.

During Terms 1 and 2, we have continued to take part in the (mixed) ECF (English Chess Federation) Online Inter School Tournaments every other Friday evening. We have also run a number of SHS only online chess competitions on the alternate Fridays, including some fun chess variants just before Christmas.

Our 2 highlights have been:
1) SHS came 2nd out of 7 teams in Division A of the Girls Schools Chess Competition,  finishing ahead of some top girls' public schools; this competition is being run as a league over the 20/21 season, with 6 different competitions scheduled over the season. This is a great result amongst top girls opposition.
2) SHS came 4th out of 10 teams in the Bristol Area Inter School Team Competition, kindly organised by Bristol Grammar School. This featured (mixed) teams from Bristol, Somerset, South Wales and Gloucestershire. This is a really strong result from the team, too.

We shall continue with the current format into Terms 3 and 4, as OTB (Over The Board) chess is not set to return any time soon. We are also setting up an online match against Denmark Road School for January. Several of the SHS Team have also been entering various individual online chess competitions, in addition to the team events.
