On Sunday 14 January, Stroud High School's Chess Team entered the ECF (English Chess Federation) South of England Secondary School Competition. The team of 3 (from Year 7 and 9) travelled to Guildford for the day, to each play 5 games against opposition from all over the south of England, from London and the home counties, to Oxfordshire and even south Wales. We were up against some tough opposition, especially from the leading independent schools, some of whom entered multiple teams.
The team got off to a flying start, winning their first match 3-0. This then meant that they faced several of the top seeds in the next two matches.
There were 27 teams present, and the top 7 qualified for the finals over the Easter holidays. Stroud High missed out on a qualification spot, finishing a creditable equal 12th.
The girls had a great day out, played some highly competitive, fighting chess. We will definitely be back next year.
