Key Stage 3

In KS3 students will build on their previous knowledge and skills through a range of skills in a variety of competitive sports and other physical activities. They will be required to be physically competent and work well to enhance their own fitness. 

The activities include team and individual games, athletic performance: aesthetic competition, outdoor and adventurous activity, analysis of performance using ICT and promoting healthy lifestyles.  Students are encouraged to assess themselves, keeping their own profiles in their student’s areas and update these on regular occasions and along with their teacher agree upon whether expectations are being met.

In Year 7: Students will be inducted to the physical education programme here at SHS with a range of activities to give them a broad vision of what sports are on offer both in the curriculum and for them to follow for a lifetime.  There are games based activities. problem solving, fitness testing and chance to show leadership. 

In Year 8:   Students will make progress in the activities followed in year 7 with the addition of more invasion based games and new themes in gymnastics and dance. Students are encouraged to extend their commitment to teams and sport for all club participation.

In Year 9:  Students will extend and develop their physical skills drawing on skills learned throughout the key stage; they can increase their leadership ability by helping the learning of others in officiating. Opportunities will be provided for students to organise and officiate in preprepation for greater responsibility and independent learning in Year 10 and for some the progress to GCSE.

Key Stage 4

In Year 9:  Students will extend and develop their physical skills drawing on skills learned throughout the key stage; they can increase their leadership ability by helping the learning of others in officiating. Opportunities will be provided for students to organise and officiate in preprepation for greater responsibility and independent learning in Year 10 and for some the progress to GCSE.

Key Stage 5

At KS 5 the syllabus enables students to extend their knowledge and understanding of the greater arena of sport, they must demonstrate practical ability in at least 2 major sports.

This six-unit course helps students to develop theoretical and analytical skills and enables them to explore areas such as anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, skill acquisition, sports psychology, socio cultural studies and historical studies

This specification provides a sound preparation for the study of Physical Education in higher education, as well as providing opportunities to develop strengths and interests leading to sport related and other careers. It encourages students to develop a wide range of transferable skills such as critical thinking, research, communication and team-work
