Year 9 Stroud High School student, Molly Meredith, has claimed victory in the 10th Anniversary edition of the Gloucestershire FameLab Final, impressing judges with her captivating talk titled "Autumnal Answers: The Science Behind Leaves and Why They Change Colour."
In her 3 minute talk, Molly explored the fascinating processes that cause leaves to turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow in autumn, explaining the chemical breakdown of chlorophyll and the role of pigments like carotenoids and anthocyanins. "I love the simplicity of leaves and trees, but the science behind it is often taken for granted," Molly explained. Her passion for nature and her ability to make a complex topic relatable and engaging made her stand out in a competitive field.
The final brought together students from schools across Gloucestershire, including fantastic talks from other Stroud-based schools Marling School, Thomas Keble, Rednock, and Wycliffe College. Each finalist delivered a three minute presentation on a scientific topic of their choice, showcasing both their knowledge and communication skills.
Molly's road to victory began with winning the Stroud High School FameLab heat. From there, she participated in a weekend workshop with the Cheltenham Science Festival team to hone her presentation and public speaking skills, and more importantly build friendships with students from all of the other schools. Reflecting on the journey, Molly shared, "After I won the Stroud High final, I attended a workshop over the weekend and got to learn new skills ready for the big final. I was shocked when they read my name out as the winner!"
Dr Coates, who has led the FameLab programme at Stroud High School for the past nine years, spoke about the value of the competition in inspiring young scientists. "The competition gives all of our Year 9 students the chance to choose their own topic and then try to master their public speaking. It inspires a sense of discovery and communication, which is at the very heart of learning science," she commented.
Molly’s victory is a proud moment not just for her but also for Stroud High School, which has been a consistent supporter of the FameLab initiative. The competition aims to nurture young talent and foster excitement about science through creativity and communication.
