European Day of Languages at SHS!

Stroud High School celebrated the European Day of Languages with a day full of creativity, colour, and culture. Students and staff embraced the opportunity to showcase their passion for languages through a wide range of activities.
The Student Services corridor was filled with an incredible display of cakes, each one reflecting a European theme. Mr John and Mrs Fox, who judged the competition, were hugely impressed by the creativity and skill on show. First place went to Samriddi (Y7) for her stunning French-themed cake, which demonstrated excellent use of colour, cultural references, technical skills and thoughtful choice of ingredients. In second place, Lyra (Y7) impressed the judges with her beautifully detailed multicultural cake, complete with intricate fondant decorations. Third place was awarded to Ellie (Y7) for her bold and imaginative German-inspired cake, which stood out for its striking colour and fondant modelling.
Meanwhile, the Main Hall was transformed into a vibrant international café, buzzing with students and staff. A huge variety of home-made food, including cakes, biscuits and even a traditional French galette, was sold to raise funds for Stroud Women’s Refuge.
Sixth Form French students also took part in lively debates conducted entirely in French. The motion, “Les chats sont meilleurs que les chiens” (Cats are better than dogs), sparked fierce argument and probing questions from fellow students and French-speaking staff. The proposing team eventually claimed victory — by a cat’s whisker.
Throughout the day, lessons began with greetings in a variety of European languages, ensuring that every student could experience the spirit of multilingualism.
The event was a fantastic success, thanks to the enthusiasm of both students and staff. From delicious food to imaginative cakes and spirited debates, the day highlighted the creativity, energy and commitment of the SHS community towards celebrating languages.
