Stroud High Sixth Form took four teams to the South West Schools’ Modern Languages Debating Competition in Bristol on 29 January 2025. These debates include formal speeches followed by a period of intense questioning and answering. Debates were conducted entirely in French, Spanish or German, with students only finding out whether they are for or against the motion when the debate starts. SHSF students were complemented on their level of research and preparation, as well as on their linguistic ability. Above all they stood out for their teamwork.
French speaking students debated the motion “Rap music has a bad influence on young people”, whilst the German team debated for the motion “Religious festivals still play an important role in German speaking countries.” Students of Spanish debated the motion “The role of women in South America has not changed.” All four teams won their debates, making this the second year that Stroud High Sixth Form modern linguists have come away from the competition with winners’ certificates.
A special thank you to the Clifton College Modern Languages Department for hosting this excellent event, and to SHS Modern Languages teachers Mr Lewis, Mr Shobbrook and Mr Deplechin for running the trip.
